This week....
Today we went to Master Gardeners and learned about the parts of a leaf and how they make food! We also learned that it's called Photosynthesis when the plant makes the food!
Thursday we will be going to the 3rd grade play at Jr High in the afternoon. We also will be taking our ELA 6 weeks test that morning.
Friday is their Math 6 weeks test.
Monday (16th) is their MOY Math test.
Tuesday (17th) is the MOY Reading test.
I know this seems like a lot of testing, but I do believe your students are well prepared and will do well on them if they apply their knowledge. These tests will give us important data on what the student struggles with so that I am able to better address that concept.
Next Friday (20th) we will be having our Christmas party. It will begin around 9am with a movie and hot chocolate in our pajamas. Students are allows to bring a small blanket that would fit in their backpack. No pillows please. We will be making our ornaments and a little craft to bring home as a surprise. I am very excited that this year Sonic is helping out with our food. Please send $2.50 so cover the cost of their wacky pack. Notes with more information will be going home today.
Also going home today are progress reports and graded papers. These DO NOT need to be signed or returned. Please note there are no Science grades, as we are starting Science this week.
Thanks! As always, call or email with questions.

I'm baaack!
**UPDATE: Due to the Apaches advancing to quarter finals, GE will have an early release on Friday, Dec. 6th.
I just realized I had taken small vacation from the blog... I apologize! I guess I just got so excited about the holidays! And, I hope each of you had a fantastic break as well!
It's hard to believe we are starting the last three weeks of school before Christmas. Here is what's going on in our class for those next three weeks!
This week... we are learning about autobiographies. We are actually writing our own, too! Also in ELA we are re-visiting our verbs and changing their tenses to past tense. We get to play some fun games with this topic! Most importantly, we are working on changing irregular verbs - shake/shook, buy/bought, etc.
In Math we are finishing counting coin collections. If you have loose change around the house, have your student work on counting it. We will test later this week on this concept and then move on to two-digit addition. This topic will continue until Christmas break, so we can get a lot of practice!!!
During this time (week of Dec. 9) we will also be PM Benchmarking for reading levels. I look forward to seeing the progress everyone is making!!! They are doing so great with their reading.
MOY testing - We will be having 2nd grade testing Dec. 16th (Math) & Dec. 17th (Reading).
Dec. 9 - 2nd grade with Master Gardeners (12:30-1:30)
Dec. 12th - 3rd grade play at Jr High for GE students
Dec. 20th - Early Release & Classroom Christmas Party (party information will be going home the week of the 9th)
Also, we just realized we are running out of classroom snacks. If you are able, please help replenish our supply.
Thanks, and have a great week!

Nov. 18- 22
Sorry this is coming to you on Tuesday night. I was out of town all weekend and between playing catch up at school, meetings, and getting end of six weeks stuff turned in, I am running a late!
We took end of 6 weeks tests last week and they did AWESOME! I am so proud of their hard work. I need to confirm, but I do believe we may have been one of the highest scoring classes.
Spelling - words that have ee and ea. My students seem to be doing MUCH better with spelling. I am impressed with how many 110's I have been having. Keep it up!
Reading at home/reading logs are getting better. As of today, there were only 3 that weren't signed. That's down from last weeks 5-6 on any given day. Thank you for making reading a priority!
Last week we conquered telling time. They blew me away with how much they already knew! It seemed to come easy for them and they did very well. This week we started money. Again, I am super proud of how much they already know! These are both pretty hard concepts and usually 2nd graders struggle…. but not these kiddos!
Last week I also re-tested them on their PM (reading) levels. Many of them moved up and have showed a lot of improvement in their reading. This is awesome and we are right on track for the year! Keep up your hard work at school and at home.
Friday we will have an early release… be looking for notes in their black binders.
Next week is only a 2 day week for Thanksgiving. Enjoy the time with your families.
Thank you for all you do with your children to help them succeed in school.

What we've been doing... in pictures!
This past Friday we had "Book Club". We wrote about the book we had been reading, glued it to a paper bag, then filled our bag with popcorn. We enjoyed telling others about what we had been reading during "book club" and really enjoyed the popcorn, too.
We also practiced telling time on the floor using BIG clocks!!
Nov. 11-15
This week....
Tuesday we will go to the Jr.High auditorium to watch the 4th grader perform their Veteran's Day musical.
All book orders are due on Wednesday, Nov. 13th. Please have money and order form back to me on this date!
Thursday is our Thanksgiving meal at GE. The parent forms were due today and have been turned in to the cafeteria. If you are coming, see you Thursday!
Today is Veteran's Day! We have already discussed what a Veteran is and what they have done for us. We will continue talking about their sacrifices and our freedom throughout the week.
Spelling: (long /a/ words) save, wait, rain, say, stay, safe, ate, day, play, may
BONUS: crayon, holiday
We are still reviewing NonFiction and text features, as well as working on finding the Main Idea of an article. We ended up moving the 6 weeks test to this week. I am unsure of the day, but it will be a test grade for this six weeks.
In Math we are finishing up our Telling Time unit. When grading papers this weekend, a handful are still mixing up the minute and hour hand. Please, review this at home with your child and reinforce telling time. They will be proud to show you what you what they know!!!
Continue signing reading logs NIGHTLY! They should read 20 minutes each night, along with math flashcards and practicing spelling.
As always, call, email or send a note if you have any questions or concerns. Have a great week!

November!!!
Hard to believe it's already November and days off from school are just around the corner! Although time off is nearing, we still have a lot of work to do. We are about to take 6 weeks test in Math & Reading...these are very important. This Thursday is the Reading test and next Wednesday we will take Math. These two tests cover everything from this 6 weeks!
We have been reading Non-Fiction text and studying text features. The students are able to find them in their own books now! We will continue with this topic the rest of the week as well.
We are also finding the MAIN IDEA of the story. This can be tricky because sometimes students want to choose tiny details in the story as the main idea. We are thinking of it as an umbrella and the rain drops are the details. While reading at home, ask your student what the main idea of their book is and have them pick out some supporting details of their main idea.
Which brings me to my next point... I STILLLLLLLLL have students not reading at home. This is very frustrating. I have asked many times, AND it's their homework!!! I have no choice but to take away privileges and write DHalls since this is a continuing problem. Please please please have your child read at home AND sign their log. All I am asking is for 20 minutes of their night. I am checking reading logs daily and expect to see parents' signatures.
Spelling this week is words that end in -ice and -ide. Their words are nice, rice, mice, slice, dice, side, ride, wide, hide, slide, and BONUS: ice cream, glider.
Telling time is our topic in Math. Students should know from 1st grade their basic time telling skills; like the hour hand is short and the minute hand is long. We are working on skip counting around the clock by 5 to find the minute. I sent a paper clock home today with your student. Please use it to practice telling time. We will soon move on to telling time to the quarter and half hour and this involved new vocabulary like "a quarter to" and "half past". So, it is imperative that we are able to tell basic time once these skills come up.
Have a great week! I'll try to post some pictures as soon as my email quits acting up!

This week...
Hello! I hope you are all enjoying the craziness of 'Drug Free' week, 'Fire Safety' Week AND Halloween as much as me. :)
Here is a summary of what's going on in class this week.
We are reading a Non-Fiction text about Helen Keller. We are still studying the text elements and comparing them to Fiction. Of course, Fiction is NOT real and Non-Fiction is real. Each group (except group 5) has a Non-Fiction Guided Reading book. Please make sure they are reading this at home. It will greatly help them be able to recognize and distinguish Fiction from Non-Fiction.
Sentences... oh sentences!!! We are trying writing sentences. We have learned the words declarative, interrogative and exclamatory this week. Today we wrote sentences about Helen Keller using each type of sentence. Please, if you have time at home, work on this with your student. They REALLY struggle with sentence formation... especially interrogative (asking) sentences. Have them form interrogative sentences using our questions words how, when, where, why, what, etc... Also, make sure they are capitalizing the first word of the sentence and that's ALL! The only exception is Proper Nouns (name of person, place or thing). They seem to want to capitalize random words in the middle of the sentence.
Dictionary skills (believe it or not) is one of the skills that a second must obtain. Today we dusted off the old dictionary and put it to use. We looked up our spelling words, figured out what the guide words were AND even locate what part of speech it was. If you have an dictionary at home, PLEASE look up a few words each night and help your student. The small amount of time I get to cover this in class is NOT near enough and it's a very hard concept for young minds... especially those who haven't mastered ABC order.
We took a Math test over Graphs today. Hopefully we did as well as we been in class. We will be starting Time on Wednesday. I love the Telling Time unit, there are so many fun things to do and before they know it, they've learned something!!
This week is Fire Safety week as I mentioned above. They had an assembly with 3 firemen today. It was very informational. Let them share with you what they learned.
It is also Drug Free week. I know many of them are too young to truly understand the impact that drugs can have on a person, their body and their family. If you would like, talk to your kids about taking care of their bodies so they can be healthy their entire life!
Here is the schedule for the remainder of the week...
Wednesday - Camo Day
Thursday - wear shades and a cap to "shade out" drugs
Friday - Apache spirit day!
Have a great rest of the week,
Mrs. Hilbig

Lucky Charm Graphs!
We've been working super hard at graphing this week. We've made graphs of our favorite sports, our favorite ice cream, our favorite food… we even "surveyed" each other on our favorite thing to do on the weekend! But, I think graphing the Lucky Charms was their favorite. Here are a few of the sweeties hard at work. Enjoy :)

Better Late Than Never
Sorry this weeks post is coming to you on Tuesday (probably Wednesday for some)!! Better late than never, right!?!?!
Alright, this week in our class....
Spelling - contractions! We are working with two words that can be put together with an apostrophe to make one word... examples: cannot/can't, she will/she'll, I am/I'm. Please see that your child studies each night! I hope your student is enjoying the new tic-tac-toe they received on Monday.
Grammar - Articles a/an. Some kiddos are still struggling with this. The important thing to remember is that a comes before a word that starts with a consonant and an comes before word that starts with a vowel. Examples: I am going to the zoo to see an elephant. / I am going to the zoo to see a zebra.
Reading - We are studying text features of non-fiction; glossary, index, photographs, titles, captions, table of contents, etc... We are reading 'The Harbor Seal Pup Grows Up' and will be looking at other non-fiction texts as well.
Writing - Students are writing daily in their journals. We have especially been working on summarizing. In the beginning of the year we referred to this concepts as "BME" which stands for beginning, middle, end. Now we are trying to use our "BME" and create a summary (4-6 sentences) about the story. It is going well but our handwriting and penmanship still needs some practice.
Math - On Friday we took a Number Line test. Those came home today for corrections. They didn't do as well as anticipated on this test. We had a long talk today in class about READING DIRECTIONS. I think (for the most part) that was the issue. The test was not difficult and I knew they could have done better from the daily work I saw in class. We talked about how we are going to start really looking at what the question is asking for and not what WE THINK the answer should be.
We started graphs on Monday. They are doing very well and the homework from last night looked great! We are studying Pictographs, Picture Graphs, Bar Graphs and Tally Graphs. We will test on this topic Monday and then begin our two weeks of working with time and temperature. This is always a fun unit!
Please see that your child practices their flashcards nightly. I know they also have AR, Guided Reading books, and spelling ... but these basic facts are SO important. We have to have one-digit addition & subtraction memorized before we start two-digit addition & subtraction. I still see a lot of counting on fingers when we do basic facts each day.
Corrections: Remember, ANYTHING below a 70 can be corrected and returned for a 70 (with correct answers)!!! They have to be turned in by the last Thursday of the 6 weeks so I have time to grade and make changes in the grade book!!!
Next week is Drug Free Week. I will be sending home a note about how we will participate in Drug Free Week at GE!
As always, feel free to contact me at school 672-1467 ext 5402 or by email @ kaley.hilbig@gonzales.txed.net.
Have a great hump day!

Parent Conferences, Open House, Book Fair, Master Gardeners
We just finished up our parent conferences on Friday for report cards. It went well and we will be doing it again for the 4th six weeks in January. I hope the everything went smooth for the parents as well. Please give us your feedback of what you think can be changed/done differently.
This week is the Scholastic Book Fair at school. We will be doing a "preview" day on Monday where the students can visits to see what they might be interested in buying. Then on Thursday we will go back to purchase. Only those who bring money to purchase will be able to go back on Thursday. This will be the only time DURING the day they may go.
Tuesday night is open house at GE. We will be having a Reading Fair for the first time at our school. Our class is working on a story board for the book "David's New Friends". You may have seen it in the classroom on Friday. They all have a part in completing it! Hopefully we will win...come to Open House Tuesday from 5-7 to find out!
We are also starting a cooperative learning program with the Gonzales Master Gardeners. We are very excited to get the opportunity to work with them and learn about plants as part of our Science curriculum.
I hope everyone has a great week! What a nice, relaxing Sunday with all this rain.
See you Tuesday. Mrs. Hilbig

Coming up this week in room 402....
Spelling - /r/ controlled words & words that end in 'ar' and 'or'. Lists will be going home tomorrow. Please make sure your students is studying these words nightly. They must provide documentation on Friday that they studied their words during the week. There are students who are not doing so and their spelling test grades are a reflection of this. This is very important and only takes about 15 each night!
**The spelling re-test is TOMORROW (Oct. 7) because all grades are due electronically by 4pm. This test is over inflectional endings. I also sent home the spelling test on Friday for a parents signature if your child did not pass. Please sign and return.
Reading/Writing - We are learning about adjectives and how they describe nouns. We will be doing several fun activities using adjectives. We are also reading our first fiction text in class, "David's New Friends", and looking at the characteristics of fiction text as well as studying characters, plot, and setting.
Guided Reading - On Friday I sent home leveled Guided Reading books with each child. Their assignment over the weekend was to become familiar with the text in the beginning of their book. I hope they have done and are continuing to do so, in addition to their library books. These guided reading books are key to improving their accuracy and fluency skills while we work in small group each day.
Math - We are still finishing up our Place Value unit. We will look at ordering numbers and adding 10 more/10 less on Monday, review for our test on Tuesday, and our Unit 3 test will be Wednesday. I am sending home their Math journals to study. It would be wonderful if you and your child sat down and went over the content.
Science - In Science we will be studying physical properties and types of matter. This is a fun unit to explore and discover that matter is all around us!
I hope everyone had a safe and fun Come & Take It weekend!

Weekly Newsletter
Mrs. Hilbig's Weekly Newsletter
Hello Parents, I hope the classroom newsletter has been getting to you each week. In an effort to "be green" I am going to start posting our classroom newsletter online starting next week.
Hopefully you are finding this information useful. I like for parents to be aware of what their chid is learning in the classroom so the conversations at home can be an extension of the lesson.
Please let me know if there are still some concerns about my expectations with homework.
I have had a chance to visit with many of you this past week on your student's progress. If I have not, I will be calling the rest of your this week to check in and address any questions or concerns and give you a brief update.
Have a great week,
Mrs. Hilbig
