The first week back FLEW by! I have a feeling that it's indicative of the entire semester. I hope everyone is enjoying the sunshine we are finally getting. I know the kiddos are excited to have recess again.
Here's what we are up to this week...
Spelling - burn, turn, nurse, hurt, supper, dinner, germ, shirt, dirt, first & BONUS: person, sister
In Language Arts we are learning about Procedural Text or "How To". Today we worked on 'How to make a PB&J sandwich'.
We are also learning about Context Clues. Those are what help us while we are reading and come across a word we don't know. We can use pictures, helping words (or, like, are, called), words you already know, or examples and definitions. Sometimes re-reading the sentence helps a lot too!
Last week we reviewed the prefixes dis, re, un, pre. This week we are looking at suffixes such as ful, less, er, est, ly, etc... We are starting with our root words and finding suffixes to match.
In Math we are comparing 2D/3D shapes. Vocabulary words like vertices, face, and edge are words they are using to describe the attributes of each 3D shape. I am really impressed at how much they already know about their shapes and how quickly they are learning the new vocabulary. We are also going to be composing and decomposing shapes. This means we will see what other shapes we can create from existing shapes.
In Social Studies we are discussing the life and accomplishments of MLK. Monday (Jan. 20) is MLK day and also a school holiday.
REPORT CARDS are coming home today with your child. Be sure and sign the envelope and return ONLY the envelope.
New flashcards are also coming home today to those who have misplaced theirs. Please be sure that your child is doing these nightly in addition to reading 20 minutes.
Thank you for your help in this matter and have a great week!
